Sorrowful Mysteries (Tuesday & Friday)
I: The Agony in the Garden
- Mark 14:32 Jesus took His disciples and...went down to a place called Gethsemane. "Sit down here while I pray", He said.
- Mark 14:34 He said to them, "My heart is filled with sorrow to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake."
- Mark 14:36 He kept saying, "Abba, (O, Father), you have the power to do all things. Take this cup away from me. But let it be as you would have it, not as I."
- Luke 22:43 And there appeared an angel from Heaven to strengthen Him.
- Luke 22:44 ...and His sweat became like drops of blood running down upon the ground.
- Luke 22:45 & 46 Rising, He found His disciples sleeping and He said to them, "Why do you sleep? Rise and pray that you might not enter into temptation."
- Mark 14:44 The traitor (Judas) had given the crowd a signal: "The man I kiss is the one you want. Arrest Him..."
- Luke 22:47 & 48 Judas approached Jesus and kissed Him. But Jesus said to him, "Judas, dost thou betray the Son of Man with a kiss?"
- Mark 14:49 After He was arrested, Jesus said, "I was daily with you in the temple teaching and you did not lay hands on me. But it is so that the scriptures may be fulfilled."
- Mark 14:53 Then they led Jesus off to the high priest and all the chief priests...
II: The Scourging at the Pillar
- Mark 15:1 As soon as it was daybreak, the chief priest, with the elders and scribes, bound Jesus, led Him away and handed Him over to Pilate.
- Mark 14:55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were busy soliciting testimony against Jesus that would lead to His death.
- Mark 14:61 The high priest questioned Him: "Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed God?"
- Mark 14:62 "I am," Jesus answered, "and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Almighty..."
- Mark 14:63, 64 The high priest said: "You heard His wicked words. What is your decision?"
- Mark 14:64 They all voted against Him: He was guilty and should be put to death.
- Mark 15:14 But Pilate said to them, "Why, what evil has He done?" But they kept crying out the more, "Crucify Him."
- Mark 15:6 Now on the occasion of a festival, he (Pilate) would release for them one prisoner -- any man they asked for.
- Mark 15:11 Meanwhile, the chief priests incited the crowd to have him release (a thief) Barabbas instead.
- Mark 15:15 Pilate so wished to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and after he had had Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified.
III: Jesus is Crowned with Thorns
- Mark 15:16 The soldiers now led Jesus away in the hall known as Praetorium.
- Mark 15:17 They dressed Him in royal purple, then wove a crown of thorns and put it on Him.
- Mark 15:18 ...and began to salute Him, "All hail! King of the Jews!"
- Mark 15:19 Continually striking Jesus on the head with a reed and spitting at Him...
- Mark 15:19 ...they genuflected before Him and pretended to pay Him homage.
- John 19:4 Pilate said, "Behold I bring Him out to you that you may know I find no guilt in Him."
- John 19:6 When the chief priests and attendants saw Him (Jesus) they cried out saying, "Crucify Him! Crucify Him!"
- John 19:7 "We have our law," the Jews responded, "and according to that law He must die because He has made Himself God's Son."
- John 19:6 Pilate said to them, "Take Him yourselves and crucify Him for I find no guilt in Him."
- Mark 15:20 When they had finished mocking Him, they stripped Him of the purple...and led Him out to crucify Him.
IV: Jesus Carries His Cross
- Matthew 27:31 And when they had mocked Him, they took the cloak off Him and led Him away to crucify Him.
- Phil. 2:7 ..He empied Himself and took the form of a slave, being born in the likeness of men.
- 1 Peter 2:23 When He (Christ) was insulted, He returned no insult. When He was made to suffer, He did not counter with threats.
- 1 Peter 2:24 Christ Himself carried our sins in His body to the cross, so that we might die to sin and live for righteousness. By His wounds you have been healed.
- Ps. 69:21 ...I looked for sympathy, but there was none; for comforters, and I found none.
- Matthew 27:32 Now as they went out, they found a many of Cyrene named Simon; whom they forced to take up His cross.
- Luke 23:32 Now there were also two other malfactors (criminals or thieves) led to execution with Him.
- Luke 23:28 He said to the holy women, "Daughters of Jerulsalem, do not weep for Me. Weep for yourselves and for your children."
- Mark 15:22 ...they brought Jesus to the site of Golgotha (which means "Skull Place")
- Phil. 2:8 And it was thus that He humbled Himself, obediently accepting even death, death on a cross.
V: The Crucifixion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ
- Mark 15:24 ...They crucified Him and divided up His garments by rolling dice for them...
- Mark 15:27 And they crucified two robbers with Him, one on His right hand and one on His left.
- Mark 15:34 Jesus said, "My God, My God, why hast Thous forsaken Me?"
- Luke 23:37 The soldiers said to Jesus, "If you are a King of the Jews, save yourself."
- Luke 23:43 Jesus said to the repentant thief, "I assure you, this day you will be with Me in Paradise."
- John 19:26, 27 Jesus addressed His mother and John, "Woman, behold thy son." Then He said to the disciple, "Behold thy mother."
- Luke 23:44 ...around midday darkness came over the whole land until midafternoon
- Luke 23:46 And Jesus cried out with a loud voice and said, "Father into Thy hands I commend My spirit," and having said this, He expired.
- John 19:34 One of the soldiers thrust a lance into His side, and immediately blood and water flowed out.
- Mark 15:39 The centurion who stood guard over Him, on seeing the manner of His death, declared, "Clearly this man was the Son of God!"
