Happy? New?
My dear Earth-friends,
The other day i decided to just leave my extraordinary bedhead hair exactly as it was when I got out of bed.
So I went out into the world looking like Einstein's unkempt younger brother and feeling simultaneously liberated and extremely self-conscious.
As usual when I make grand sartorial moves, no one noticed though one friend did say it made a change because I'm "usually so immaculate"....
It had never crossed my mind that anyone considered me to be immaculate! I quickly went home and immaculated myself and all was well.
My point being, if I hadn't gone out looking such a state, I'd never have discovered that.... Er ... Oh. Well it seemed like a point worth making but now I see it written down it just seems like another pointless Mattstory....
Good.
So it's 2010 is it? Will it be as futuristic as it sounds?
I hope not. I like toast you see, and toast is the kind of thing that's bound to be engineered out of our futurelives... Too messy, too inefficient.
We'll probably be expected to make do with an injection...
What the fuck am I talking about? It's this tiny iscreen. It only makes it possible to have tiny ithoughts.
I suppose that's where all the twatty twittering came from - "South of France, pursing my lips as I wipe my arse"
etc.
I DON'T CARE.
So. Hopefully toast will survive and Twitter will go down the Shitter.
Happy! New!!
Anyroad...
I have nearly finished making a proper new album full of proper new songs.
Brother Ben and honorary brother Dave came out to LA (where I seem to live - most odd...) and we had a quite fantastic week recording and laughing and listening and playing.
And at the end of the week we had recorded 12 new songs and then I got a cold and now I'm finishing the singing and we're mixing and it all sounds great and unexpected and deep and enjoyable and new.
And I love it!
It may be called 'Magnetic North'. It may be coming out on 30th March 2010.
I will tell you more next time, next year...
I will go now because the other day my device ate the excellent blog I painstakingly wrote for y'all ( including an excellent bit about lizards) leaving with nothing but hollow irage.
So I'd better stop before it happens ag
(still here actually, have a fine endofyearstartofyear, I'll be in touch
shortly with more)
Love from
The
Matt

Ps I recently had the pleasure of producing some of the new Seabird album which is very good. It's called 'Rocks into Rivers', it's out now and you should check it out. Lovely chaps, great singer, great songs and the production, well it's in a class of it's own.......!

A trillion apologies...
Hello big/small world. It’s been a while I know…
Sorry, I’ve been busy moving myself and my family from London UK to Los Angeles USA which turns out to be a rather stressful thing to do.
Still here we are now.
Insightful observations:
It is hot.
‘Fanny’ means something else here...
‘Perfect’ and ‘Wonderful’ are what you say when you want the person who insists on talking to you to go away/expire. Politeness used as extreme rudeness – Yes!!!
Small News:
I’m going to play a small friendly show for small friendly people on October the First in LA. My friend Celia Chavez will also be playing. It will be nice:
Thursday Oct 1st 8pm
Genghis Cohen (yes, really)
740 N Fairfax Ave
W. Hollywood 90046
$7 gets you in.
If you live in the right part of the world do come along.
Bigger News:
I am now officially starting a new album.
The songs are coming together, Ben and Dave are coming over, I fear it may be great...
Working Titles:
Beware the Brown Note
Beneath the Beyond the Behind the Bikesheds 4
F**k the Police
There.
How are you, by the way?
And why is Halloween such a big deal here?
Take care please.

Hello, my dear, dear children.
Uncle Matt here. you know - the funny man who sings all those sad songs and then tells peculiar stories....
so. now. then.
Soon i am going to have a very strange few days. On Thursday i am going to write some songs with an Australian, then on friday two people from America are coming here and me and ben are going to stay up all night recording their music in an abandoned church. on saturday night we're doing that again. then on sunday i am going to America to write some songs with someone from London, then i am coming back to London and going straight from the airport to Bristol, hopefully in time to play the first gig of the Uk tour. Phew...
that's what i do. i'm like a sort of niche superhero - always on hand to fight for what's right, so long as it's in an extrememly limited and specific field. for example, if the world is ever threatened by a weak middle eight or a 3rd verse with the same words as the 1st verse or the chords from 'so lonely' then it's possible i may be the superhero you need.
in almost all other cases i would suggest spider/super/bat/hen - man.
hnnnnnnnnnnn.
Sometimes it's fun to have a Competetion. here's one:

Hello my fellow humans.
I am writing this from my space-pod orbiting the earth at a distance of 3 metres.
how small you all look from up here. like ants. oh. those are ants....
anyway, soon I'll be earthbound once more. I will walk amongst the blinkered masses, quietly bearing the combined gift and curse of all that I have seen, all that I have been......the massive quietude of the cosmos, the implacable roar of our sun, and of course, Uranus.
ok matt. very good. anything useful today?
Words&Music is being released at long last on June 15th 2009 on Decca. 6 lovely, gentle new recordings of old songs, 3 new songs, a Paul Simon cover and 2 special re-workings featuring Other Artists. It was designed to bring solace. It works for me.... get it here:

Also my first UK tour for bloomin' years. It will be intimate and splendid . The brilliant KasierCartel will be coming over from Brooklyn to help out, and the also brilliant Foreign Slippers will be joining in too.I can't wait to see you and sing for you. I shall be taking requests.

Huzzo,
Noises and Sounds.
Some people can make a convincing trumpet sound with their mouths. Some people can do a giant whistle. Russell Smith from school could belch on request and my son discovered tonight that if he sat on his rubber ducky when the bath had just run out it made the most satisfactory farting noise.really excellently gassy and damp. We both wept with laughter. Ahh, noises and sounds....
Oh. Sorry - did I say all that out loud?
I'm supposed to be telling you things.
Important Things to do with Me and touring in the 'United' 'Kingdom'. so:
In June of this year 2009 I will be doing a small and imperfectly formed UK tour of the UK.
So far these are the dates and the venues:
June
18th - Bristol Thekla
19th - Manchester Academy
20th - Edinburgh Reid Hall
22nd - Nottingham Rescue Rooms
23rd - Birmingham Glee Club
24th - Cardiff Glee Club
28th - London Tabernacle
We may add more depending on Other Things to do with Me and Releasing 'Words and Music' in the Great British United Kingdom. This will also happen in June.
Because you're worth it, I've made 4 splendid special new recordings to accompany the release featuring a few splendid and special artists singing my songs. 2 of these - new versions of 'tongue-tied' and 'brighter than sunshine' will be bonus tracks on the Uk album, the other 2 - a very dramatic reading of 'another little hole' by Duke Special and a ghostly 'Strange&Beautiful' by Foreign Slippers - will be available exclusively to people who buy a ticket for one of the uk dates. a very good deal if you ask me. Details will emerge once I've pulled my finger out (of what?) and finished mixing them.
They all sound lovely - it's most interesting hearing other vocalists singing songs you've been singing for years in your own odd way. Makes me wonder if I should always get other people to sing 'em.....
but they'd miss me in the end. I'd wake up one morning to a strange skritching and scratching at the bedroom door and there they'd be. in a bit wonky-faced pile, looking up at me all hesitant but happy and I'd open my mouth and in they'd all hop. Safe and Sound.
Oh. did I say that too.
sorry. time to go.
What are some of your favourite Noises and Sounds?

Hello hello hello.
some people write 'hullo' but I think that this practise is WRONG. so stop it.
I know it's not considered polite to have any sort of prescriptive attitudes these days, especially regarding the nebulous and ever-evolving world of language and personal expression, BUT it's h-E-l-lo.Hello. Hello.
When I was at school we said 'Hutcha' instead.
some informations for you:
1. On Saturday 14th I'll be singing at my mum's 60th birthday party near her house.
in the event you can't make that try the BPI showcase on 18th at Latitude 3 as part of SXSW in Austin (I'm on at midnight)
or 19th at Elysium 10pm(also in Austin) OR Hotel cafe in LA on 25th 8pm.
see you there. if you bring a musical instrument you can join in. (no clarinets).
2. A long overdue tour of the UK is taking shape. here are some clues:-
Seats
Slippers
A Singing Cat and a Drumming Dog
June
Candles
Unusualments.
it's going to be splendid!
now. back to work. or perhaps a lovely. cup. of.
tea..........?

Lehho. Hope all is well. Happy New and Many Happy to Me. And Her. I am now
Amazingly Old. Where's all the wisdom I was promised? Ho hum....
This morning I've been listening to music beginning with the letter B. B is
a good one - I've had Bach, Berio and Beck and I've only just finished my
Breakfast. (Beetawix, two. I wanted Ddreshies but my son announced that
since he'd 'helped' in the supermarket, they were all his and that he was
going to eat them every tuesday and wednesday for the rest of his
life...."but it's monday" I mumble. He passes me the Beetawix with a tiny
shake of his lovely head.)
Anyhoooo. Tomorrow I shall listen to the C's. Chopin, Cocteau Twins,
Chicago....Mmmmmm. I wonder what the best letter will be? Any Thoughts?
To business. I am being coaxed from my burrow a few times over the next few
weeks. Perhaps you would like to join me?
Tomorrow (tuesday 10th feb) me and Ben will play with our old tour-mates The
Fray at the Scala in London.
Then on Friday (13th Feb) I'll be playing solo at the Town Hall in New York
with the excellent Martin Sexton. Saturday night I'll pop up in Brooklyn
somewhere kooky with KaiserCartel for some Valentines hi-jinx.
Then back to the burrow for a few weeks seeing if I can find my nuts.
Then on Saturday 28th March I'll be bringing my solo show to the Purcell
Rooms on London's fancy Southbank. Come and see. I'll be taking requests....
That's it. That's all there was.
What's next - The Band or perhaps a little Belinda.....?
Have a good time. All the time.

Dearest Dudes and Dudettes,
Hello again from London in England.
I hope you're all well and have found that thing you mislaid.
If you are one of the Dudes or dudettes that live in america then I'd like to congratulate you on a fine choice of new president dude. The other dude used to be kinda cool but the dudette??
Anyway I hope you're pleased. I'm pleased. Feels like a big wave of pleased-ness has washed over all of us.
My children are brown, and now they'll grow up with another brown dude in charge of america. So they might never even have to wonder why all the pink dudes seemed to be in charge. And so the world is changed.
Even more important than all that, my new website is here (with scissors as promised).
I imagine some of you are wondering why there's no forum/msg board thing.
It's not because I want to silence you. It's just being re-jigged to work inside the new site. It will arrive shortly and we can all start posting and reading and opining and disagreeing. Splendid.
I had a lovely time on my little tour. Thanks to everyone who came along and sang along and made me play songs that I'd forgotten all about. Turns out I quite like playing on my own - it felt like a proper conversation. I think I'll do some more in some more places. I'll let you know where and when.
Feel free to get the new album, and let me know what you make of it. It's deliberately gentle - I needed to make a cup of hot chocolate on a winters evening with a storm outside but cosy inside sort of record. It is winter now and I hope it brings a little soothing warmth whenever it comes on...
I think it's all over...
It is now.

It is now.
