Erin, thanks for your comments... The limit set by the government including the Trekking Agents Association of Nepal (TAAN) is only 25 kilos. People say anything to justify what they are doing.
At our company, we even require a lower weight... of 20 kilos, reasons are simple
1. An approximation at 20 would reach 22-25 m...ax... but a simple lift test can determine if it is within margins
2. A light weight carrying porter is a very good safety alternative, should anything happen in the mountain.. He becomes a runner, and has in some cases with our company, even carried a client off the mountain. We had a case of High Altitude Sickness at Gorakshep, when our guide handed over the clients load to the porter (who could carry it also because he was carrying lesser weight) and carried a 72 kilo man from Gorakhshep to Periche (at night), where we sent a helicopter and rescued the client the next morning
There are more obvious reasons too of course.

Erin, no doubt WE uses local operators in Nepal... and they also do philanthropic work in Nepal... I am not undermining what WE does in Nepal... its a good and required service... However, its time that Nepalese operators also compete at similar levels and ensure that 100% of tourism dollar comes into the country, the...reby easing it for the travelers and helping make tourism even more responsible... and I just want to promote the fact that Nepalese operators are able and competent... in fact, at certain times are far better, considering that they are armed with live local information.
Having said that, I have seen WE porters carry way over the recommended 20-25 kilos in the mountains of Nepal... Could have been one off incidents, but I have seen and experienced enough to know that there is a big gap between saying and doing!
But that is the nature of the industry... it is a continuous effort to make sustainability happen that counts!
See you in the mountains!

You can also check local operators from nepal.... not all but many are real good... and will offer similar services to that you can get out of WE or bigger companies....
You can find them at http://www.responsibletravelnepal.com
Remember, when you travel using big companies not based at the destination, a lot of your ...tourism dollar can get leaked out... However, you do have to be careful when you choose local operators too, hence using reliable information and asking right questions might be important... or hearing from other travellers...
Try taking multiple quotes to compare service (try to avoid price competitions, it never benefits anyone though it looks like it benefits you, there is always a compromise on something!)
Enjoy!
